Capt. Condon died at his home on Condon Street after a long illness. He lived in Matinicus until he was about 25 years of age. In 1851 he went to California, via Panama, and remained in the mines for two years, after which he returned to Belfast. He followed various branches of the fishing business through life. In
early years he was at sea and commanded at different times the schooners President, Myra, Harmona, Senator, Castelaine, and Leo. He was also associated with his father in the fish curing businesss, having extensive yards for drying fish, with a wharf, storehouse, etc., at the foot of the street since named in
their honor, Condon Street. He was later associated with Dr. N. P. Monroe and Axel Hayfore in the fishing business, having at one time eight vessels, steamrendering vats, boilers, seines, and other paraphanalia. He also had a fish market for a few years in a store on the corner of Main and Washington Streets. The 1850 Matinicus Census shows William Crie, 30, and Mercy, 28, with their issue. The census has Reuben, age 9. Reuben was the son of Reuben and Mercy. Also in the home were John Lovett, 59, Sally Lovett, 26, Lydia Young, 63, and John Young, 23. Lydia Young was Mercy's mother, and John was probably a brother.
Reuben L Crie married Floretta E Tolman, daughter of Isaac Tolman and Susan Crie, on 10 August 1862.1
Reuben, three days after his marriage, left for the front as a private in the 2nd Maine Battery, serving until 1865 when he returned as a lieutenant.1
